Welcome to Madrid, a vibrant trial site within the European Union-funded UNCHAIN project. In recent years, Madrid’s urban distribution of goods has soared, intensified by the surge in online commerce and home delivery services, presenting challenges for sustainable mobility.

Aligned with Madrid’s ambitious Madrid 360 Strategy and the newly approved Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), UNCHAIN Madrid is dedicated to optimising urban freight distribution and enhancing sustainability throughout the city.

As part of this transformative initiative, an important measure has been included in the new SUMP: the implementation of low-emission zones (LEZ) in the city, starting from January 2022. By 2025, the entire 604 km2 territory of the capital will be declared an LEZ, with special protection zones established in areas facing significant pollution challenges.

A key focus of the SUMP is the impulse and promotion of logistics micro hubs in Madrid. These shared transport facilities serve as innovative consolidation centres, optimising space usage and offering flexibility for logistics operators. As a result, we are striving to reduce emissions and enhance overall efficiency in urban logistics operations.

Moreover, UNCHAIN Madrid is actively engaged in dynamic and efficient curbside management. The curbside, being a highly sought-after space, requires careful balancing to minimise externalities such as illegal double parking, congestion, and safety issues. Through the “Dynamic curbside management tool,” we aim to optimise curbside access for all agents and activities while mitigating potential challenges.

Our living lab approach fosters collaboration with key stakeholders, including Madrid City Council and EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transportes), which manages various urban mobility services. Together, we are implementing innovative solutions to unleash the potential of valuable real-time information for logistics operations and route planning. This includes congestion forecasting and safe route planning to optimise delivery routes and enhance safety for both citizens and urban logistics drivers.

Through the UNCHAIN project, Madrid is at the forefront of transforming urban logistics, showcasing the effectiveness of sustainable strategies, such as low-emission zones, logistics micro hubs, and dynamic curbside management. As a living lab, we are paving the way for greener and smarter urban logistics, not only within Madrid but also serving as a blueprint for other European cities.

Join us in this exciting journey towards a sustainable and thriving Madrid, where innovation meets real-world impact. Together, we are UNCHAINing the potential of urban logistics, making strides towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.
