Berlin

Welcome to Berlin, where we are spearheading a transformative initiative to revolutionize urban logistics in Germany’s vibrant capital. Commercial traffic, encompassing both freight and passenger transport, plays a significant role in our city and region, but it also presents challenges like noise, air pollution, high infrastructure maintenance costs, and traffic safety concerns.

As a living lab of the UNCHAIN project, we are dedicated to local learning and establishing new processes and structures to strategically manage commercial transport in Berlin. Our city stands as a “front runner” with a politically agreed and legally anchored Sustainable Urban Logistics Plan (SULP), currently under implementation. However, the landscape is evolving rapidly, with technological advancements, changing e-commerce purchasing behaviours, and intensifying climate demands.

At UNCHAIN Berlin, we are at the forefront of addressing these challenges and finding innovative solutions that are climate-friendly, efficient, and customer-oriented. Collaborating closely with the Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Mobility, Consumer Protection, and Climate Protection, our efforts are aligned with the Integrated Commercial Transport Concept Berlin (IWVK; Berlin SULP) and the Urban Development Plan Mobility and Transport (StEP MoVe; Berlin SUMP).

Our diverse use cases form the heart of our transformative efforts. From active urban vehicle access regulations to congestion forecasting and advanced route planning, each initiative focuses on optimizing urban logistics and enhancing sustainability throughout the city.

Through the “Active UVARs and city regulations tool,” we evaluate and digitalize restrictions and regulations to ensure they align with the Integrated Commercial Transport Concept (IWVK). This approach helps us establish sustainable concepts that cater to logistic needs, optimize delivery routes, and reduce emissions, creating a positive impact on Berlin’s commercial transport initiatives and overall city planning.

Exploring the potential of micro-depots, our “Congestion forecasting and safe route planning tool” integrates real-time traffic data and micro-depot availability status for cargo bike operators. This empowers them to navigate efficient and safe delivery routes, while also aiding policy makers and planners in making informed decisions about optimizing micro-depot targeting.

To find eco-friendly, urban-compatible solutions, we assess the effect of micro-depots through the “UCC location and integrated planning KIT.” This valuable tool enables us to analyse existing micro-depot locations and identify areas with potential for new micro-depots based on predefined criteria. The resulting dashboard incorporates real-time traffic information, fostering better planning and decision-making for the future of urban logistics.

Join UNCHAIN Berlin in our mission to transform urban logistics, making our city cleaner, greener, and more efficient. Together, we are UNCHAINing the future of commercial transport for a sustainable and thriving capital.
